About

Time Team America’s prime-time public television series, interactive website, and youth field schools provide stimulating opportunities for the public to learn about archaeology and explore some of the most important research taking place at sites around the United States.
Through a unique collaboration between media producers, archaeologists, and educators Time Team America tells significant stories from our past in compelling formats that showcase authentic and ethical archaeological practices.
Our Team brings to bear vast and varied expertise, a number of technologically advanced tools, and old-fashioned elbow grease on digs where ongoing work has brought local archaeologists to the brink of a mystery. Host Justine Shapiro gets the scoop as team members, experimental archaeologists, scientific experts, and historians grapple with key questions. Episodes cover the breadth of North American archaeology, from a 10,000-year-old bison kill site to a newly discovered Civil War prisoner camp, and more.
By transforming the interpretation of archaeological discovery into good storytelling, Time Team America evokes the humanistic side of archaeology and strives for a deeper understanding of America’s past. Time Team America also showcases the many scientific disciplines that contribute to archaeological research and exposes the tangible ways the field relies on cutting-edge technology and concepts from mathematics.
Time Team America believes that exploring locally and culturally relevant stories from the past with a kit of scientific and high-tech tools can engage a next generation of archaeologists and scientists. In that spirit, Time Team America runs field schools for youth from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. At three of the sites featured in season two of the television series and at one additional location, these young people took part in experiential learning and interacted with Team members and Contributing Scientists & Experts—with significant outcomes.
For viewers and field school participants, the adventure continues throughout our website, which features a range of exclusive videos, interactives, downloadable activities, and ways to get involved locally. Time Team America invites you to get to know the Team, engage with the archaeological process and underpinning science, learn more about our featured sites, and immerse yourself in humankind’s shared cultural and physical past.
A generous grant from the National Science Foundation supports Time Team America’s vision. Rockman et al conducted Time Team America’s independent evaluation.
